Does Innovation Really Make a Difference?

At Milgard, we’re proud to offer doors and windows that do so much more than let in air and natural light. Our engineers are renowned for their cutting-edge designs that use patented technologies, and we’ve introduced low-maintenance exterior finishes and easy-opening windows with SmartTouch handles and locks. We’re not stopping there, though, and we’re always looking for more ways to address customers’ needs. For us, innovation is all about anticipating the features that homeowners want.

How Well Do the Top Rated Replacement Windows Perform?

The AAMA or American Architectural Manufacturers Association has a long history of leadership within the industry, and they’ve helped to develop the door and window performance standards we all follow today. Milgard’s patio windows and doors all carry the AAMA’s Gold Label, which proves that we’ve met their requirements and everything has undergone independent testing for air leakage, water penetration, forced entry resistance, and structural integrity.

What Are People Saying Online About Milgard, and Which Awards Has the Company Won?

Back in June 2017, Milgard Windows & Doors earned the honor of being named the highest-rated patio door and window brand online. In 2016, we won Window & Door’s award for Most Innovative Window for our Essence Series radius casements. According to Chad Martinez, the product manager for the Essence Series, the product uses cutting-edge technologies. They’re designed with durable phenolic exteriors that allow greater flexibility in shape and design, and their non-visible fasteners give them a more streamlined appearance.

The wooden Essence Series line was, in the past, recognized as the winner of the Crystal Achievement award in the innovation category. This series combines a rugged fiberglass exterior that offers protection from the elements with a solid wooden core that provides enduring beauty and great performance. With our radius casement windows, now available in gabled styles, we’ll continue to receive the industry’s top honors while offering some of the most advanced products on the market.

How Did Milgard Get Its Start?

Milgard Window & Door was founded in Tacoma, WA in 1958 by Maurice Milgard Jr. and his son Gary; another son, Jim, joined the company three years later. A short time later, the Milgard men diversified their offerings a bit, getting into the aluminum window industry. When Gary Milgard left the company’s glass division, he started an aluminum window company known as Milgard Manufacturing; his goal was to provide high-quality, reliable aluminum windows made to meet the architectural and structural demands of the western US. Six years later, Milgard Manufacturing began building sliding glass doors, and shortly thereafter, their aluminum frames were retooled to accommodate insulating and single-pane glass.

In 1989, Milgard introduced its first vinyl-frame windows, and WoodClad fiberglass doors and windows were introduced the following year. At Milgard, growth continues to be a top priority. Along with the location in Tacoma, the company now has service, sales, and manufacturing centers in Portland, Sacramento, Temecula, Denver, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, and the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Does In-House Manufacturing Make a Difference?

While many door and window companies distribute other vendors’ products, Milgard is one of only a few vertically-integrated manufacturers. We make our own vinyl components and glass units, frames, and more. The vinyl plant in Tacoma started extruding frames in 1988, and to ensure the utmost quality, we control the manufacturing process from start to finish. Our fiberglass components receive enormous attention to detail, and almost all our components are manufactured in-house to ensure top quality.
