A Milgard window’s balance shoe helps guide the window up and down. It is essential that you replace a balance shoe when necessary. This article will help guide you through the process of how to replace a window balance shoe. The materials needed for this procedure are a Phillips screwdriver, flat head screwdriver or putty knife, and a new window balance shoe.

The first thing you want to do is find the silver take out clips on both sides of the window jamb. Take either your putty knife or flat head screwdriver and use it to pop out the clips from underneath at a forty-five-degree angle. Next, find the sash stops which are there to stop the window from disengaging. Carefully, use your screwdriver to remove the sash stop. Disengage the sash by sliding it up making sure that both sides catch on the take out clips. If they catch, you should see the bottom of the spring loaded balancers. Now, you can slide the sash out to remove it. Once you have removed the sash, locate the balance shoe and, using your Phillips head screwdriver, take out the screw that is holding the shoe.

Insert the new shoe by screwing it into to the sash with your Phillips screwdriver making sure that you do not over torque the screw. Put the sash back into the window by placing it above the bottom of the balancer and pushing it in. Now, balance it back and forth until you feel both tops catch. Bring the sash down one or two inches making sure there is no metal visible on either side of the spring. Finally, replace the take out clips and close the sash before replacing the sash stops.

You have now successfully replaced your Milgard window’s balance shoe.
