How to Pick the Right Door

As of last year, there were nearly 128 million households in America. Because people instinctively crave small changes (and because, you know, things break), it’s only natural that a lot of remodeling, redecorating, and household object replacement takes place on a daily basis.

Some of the most essential items you’re going to want to switch up are your doors. You’re going to need to change your front door sometimes, sure, but you’ll also want to vary those leading in and out of other rooms.

If you’re remodeling and looking to switch things up, it can be tricky to pick the right door to go with your flooring, walls, and decor. Read on to get the best tips on how to make your room look amazing so you can have a stress-free remodeling experience.

Do Your Research

Before you begin door shopping, it’s important to do your research. Go online and see what you want, and be sure that you’re practical in your decision.

For example, if you’re looking into getting a new front door for your home, you’re going to need to browse the different types and materials that are offered and what the benefits of each one are. You want something durable and functional, as well as pleasing to the eye.

This is also the case for doors that lead between rooms of your home. Although they’re less susceptible to weather damage, you don’t want them to be destroyed by normal wear and tear.

Also, consider your budget. You don’t want to buy anything overly expensive. It isn’t worth going into debt because you wanted a new door. Lucky for you, we offer a lot of affordable styles. Still, this is important to think about.

Consider Your Floor Type

Now that we’ve got the essentials out of the way, the fun can begin! If you don’t currently plan on replacing the flooring in your home (or in the rooms you’re installing doors in), you need to match the door your buy to your flooring.

If you have an oak floor with horizontal grains, you probably don’t want a redwood door with vertical ones. Likewise, you don’t want a robin’s egg blue painted-door if your floor has a 1980s-style hot pink shag carpeting — no matter what you think now, it won’t be cool. It’s an eyesore that you’ll get sick of after a week.

Practically speaking, it’s also important that your door isn’t too tall for the height of your hardwood flooring. You don’t want it squeaking and leaving scratch marks on the floor every time it swings open. Hint: Sliding glass doors are great if they work with your room, but they won’t always. There are ways to solve this problem even after installation, but it’s best not to encounter it in the first place.

Make Things Match…

When replacing any household item, it’s important to make sure that they match the decor. Doors are no exception. Even if you love funky colors, you don’t want to end up with a door that totally clashes with your decor.

You don’t need to be into lime green and neon blue for this problem to occur, though. Contrary to popular belief, neutral colors can also clash with one another, and the result is strange. Do you have a lot of gray lamps and porcelain statuettes in your living room? A brown door is going to look really weird with that. Just think about it. Ew.

Trim is also important to consider when getting a new door. Unless you’re repainting all the trim in your room or home, you don’t want your door to stand out too much against your trim. This issue can make your room look messy and can reflect that you’re sloppy at decorating, even if this isn’t true.

…But Don’t Match Too Much

While matching your door to your flooring, decor, and trim, it’s also key to remember that it’s possible to have too much of a good thing. By this, we mean that colors and styles can’t 100% match with one another and look identical. When this happens, your room looks boring. Everything blends together and looking around becomes… well, a little annoying.

When you think about matching, think less about having an identical color door and floor and, rather, think about colors and patterns that complement each other. Eggshell white looks awesome with chestnut, for example. Browse sites like Pinterest and see what looks good to you. This is a way to get some creative insight and make an informed choice.

It’s All in the Decor

Once you figure out how to match your new door with the flooring and trim of your home, it’s time to think about decor, like paintings, photographs, and trinkets that you cherish and want around the room.

Make sure that whatever door you pick leaves room for — and goes well with — these items. If something has sentimental value, you can’t replace it in the same way you could with an eyesore of a lamp that clashes with your new door. When remodeling, remember what’s important. Don’t compromise on these items. Remember that the things we care about are what makes our house a home.
