How to Design and Decorate a Room With French Doors

French doors can open up a vista that brings the outside into your home, as well as letting in light and air. The doors themselves can be very attractive, too, adding interest to a room. Almost any room will benefit from adding French doors, as they add character and warmth to your interior design.

Here are some tips to help you design and decorate with furniture, window treatments and more.

Outside the Room

While these doors add beauty to the inside of your home, you’ll first need to think about the outside of where your doors will be positioned.

For example, do the doors lead to a garden or a balcony? If the answer is a garden, are there steps at a suitable level so you can not only view but also access the garden from your room?

The view outside will also likely have an impact on how you decorate. So, make sure you have a proper vision of the outside, before committing to the decor inside.

Lifestyle

Your lifestyle will have a large impact on how you adorn a room with French doors. Perhaps you’re the kind of person that likes to sit in the garden with a fresh cup of coffee in the morning, no matter the time of year.

If you’re far more likely to open your doors to the outside in the summertime, then bear that in mind. The way you arrange your room will depend much on how you live from day to day, so tailor it to suit your needs.

The Choice of Room

Each room in your home has different requirements, and arranging your decor will change with each one.

Reception Rooms

For living and reception rooms, French doors add a beautiful focal point and frame the view outside. For large rooms, a wall of several sets of doors will draw light into the room and will make for a beautiful sight when all those doors are opened in pleasant weather.

If you have the luxury of a pretty view, then make that the center of your room. Styles change over the years, but the outdoors is always stunning.

Arrange sofas and armchairs to face outwards, looking towards your view. For large rooms, you can place seating in front of the doors, but leave a couple of yards between the back of a sofa and the door if possible.

When choosing window dressings, there are several options out there. However, we recommend choosing drapery as the best option for dressing your doors. Curtains highlight the beauty of French doors and don’t create an obstacle to your view during the day.

Bedroom

In a bedroom, these doors are a wonderful addition and mean you’ll have access to the morning sun every day.

A good thing to remember, though, is you’ll let a lot of light in as you’re waking up. To counter this, use heavy drapes to dress your doors. Blackout lining is an excellent choice, as you’ll be in control of when you let in the sunshine, and also keep out the noise.

Another thing to remember is, curtains can keep a room warm or cool, which is vital in a bedroom with large windows.

If your room allows it, positioning your bed to face the outside is a very pleasant way to wake up each morning. However, positioning your bed, so your doors are at the side is good for avoiding glare, and for privacy if that’s an issue.

Additional Window Styles

If you’re having new French doors put into your home, then now is an ideal opportunity to consider whether additional windows could benefit you.

The beauty of these doors is that they allow light and air into a room, but during inclement weather or at night, opening your doors isn’t ideal.

To allow air into the room without having to leave your doors wide open, consider which additional windows might be useful in your room. For example, casement or double-hung windows are great for letting in a breeze without letting in the rain.

Another thing to consider is your access to the outdoors. If your doors lead onto a shaded balcony, you may desire more light to come in. In that case, picture windows are a great way to add light, while maintaining an even temperature inside.

Paint Colors

The colors you choose for your room will depend much on your taste. Still, a few rules apply.

Small rooms do best with bright colors, as dark colors tend to make them feel cramped. The light from your French doors will illuminate the room year-round, creating space.

For larger rooms, a medium-tone color works well. Rooms with plenty of doors and windows can often take a darker shade, however, because of the sunlight that’ll flood in during the day.

Key Things to Remember

When putting together your room, remember that French doors will allow access to the outside. To protect your flooring, you should use a mat or rug to wipe and store shoes.

Another tip is to be cautious of where you hang pictures. Some prints and paintings can fade from exposure to sunlight, so hang these further inside your room, and not close to your doors.

Finally, when placing furniture, remember that these can block the light that enters a room. Avoid placing furniture close to these doors to let in light, and also minimize any damage to your home.

Using French Doors in Your Room Design

For a light, bright and spacious room with beautiful views and easy access to the outdoors, these doors are a must. Their attractive design and usability make them an essential feature in almost any room.

For bright rooms, pale colors will reflect and bounce the light to create space. However, when you want to close off your home to the outside, heavy drapes are the way to go, to add beauty inside but keep a room cozy and private.

Whatever the design of your home, French doors are an excellent complement to any abode, and will give it the wow-factor you’ll love.
