How To Install and Adjust Rollers on a Sliding Window

It is essential that your horizontal sliding window slides fluidly. To maintain smooth operation from your Milgard sliding window, you may need to make occasional adjustments including roller adjustments to ensure a level sash reveal. This article will tell you how to install and adjust rollers on a horizontal sliding window. (Please make sure to read our FAQs disclaimer before reviewing or enacting any FAQ content/recommendations.)

The proper tools for this project are a flat head screwdriver, silicone spray, paper towels, and safety glasses and gloves.

The first step is to open up the sash completely. On both sides of the sash, you will see tilt buttons. Push them, tilt the top of the sash, and lift it out of the track. Then, on the bottom of the track, you will see two assemblies that contain vinyl wheel. There are two positions for the wheels in each assembly. Snap the wheels out of their casings with your flat head screwdriver. Next, raise or lower the wheel to the appropriate height before snapping them back into place.

Once you have correctly adjusted the vinyl wheels and they are in their proper position, it is time to clean the vinyl wheels. First, you want to roll the wheels back and forth to make sure that they have no dirt or debris in them. Next, take your silicone spray and lightly spray the wheels. Using a paper towel, wipe down the wheels until there is no more visible silicone.

Now that the rollers on your Milgard window are appropriately adjusted and cleaned, it is time to reinstall the sash. You need to make sure the tilt latches are down; then, tilt the sash into the bottom part of the frame and push the upper part up into the frame. When you hear a click, you will know that the tilt latches are engaged, you have correctly reinstalled the sash.

Finally, you should slide the window back and forth to ensure that it is operating smoothly.
